1934 Dated ONE-SHEET!
TOP 10 GREATEST ANIMATION POSTER!
This poster has
a terrific history:
Elzie Crisler
Segar
created Popeye as a comic strip character
that first appeared in the Thimble Theater in 1929 thru King Features
Syndicate. The one eyed sailor became an immediate sensation and was given
his own headline strip across the country. That strip became one of the most
popular newspaper features during the early 1930’s. A few Years
later, in 1933, the Fleischer Brother’s Animation Studio introduced the
character to movie going audiences thru a Betty Boop cartoon entitled, “Betty Boop Meets Popeye the Sailor.” That also was an
immediate hit, and so the studio committed to a string of shorts starring
America’s new favorite maritime spinach eater. A few months later, this
poster was printed to advertise the new series, and the rest is history.
Needless to say, this early depression era one-sheet represents the character
and its place amongst the icons perfectly! In fact, this is one of the TOP
10 most important animation posters known to exist!
If you’re an
animation aficionado, you know how important the Fleischer Studio was in the
development of animation. Popeye was their biggest and greatest achievement.
This poster represents it better than ANY of the other posters made to advertise
the popular action packed shorts, or features for that matter. Why? Simple. The stellar black and white image and rarity of the
poster, not to mention the vintage, makes this more than an essential piece to
own if you’re into classic characters, Hollywood, or early animation.
There’s one important element presented on
this poster that you won’t find on any of the other Popeye one-sheets, and that’s the sublime simplicity of the clean black ink on the solid white paper. IT’S PERFECT!
Perfect, in the sense that it represents the character as first launched in the strip
AND on film. Beautiful, simple,
black & white
!
You’ve got to love that. All
of the other Fleischer posters are funky colors like orange and yellow. This is
the
ONLY
black and white one, which makes it stand out, WAY out! The 1934 date on
the poster doesn’t hurt either. This poster image was so successful that Fleischer
and Paramount reissued it in the late 1930’s. I think the date on the reissue
one-sheet was 1937 or ’39. It never much mattered to me, given that the reissue poster was printed with a funky purple ink, instead of the stellar black, which didn’t work well at all. Nevertheless,
this 1934 black and white beauty most certainly does, and it’s available for
sale for the first time in 20 years!
I’ve been collecting vintage film posters full-time for over 40 years now, and I can say without qualification that the one-sheets made in 1934 are at the peak of rarity when it comes to depression era paper. Because I’ve been avidly following the movie poster market since 1977, without a break, I’ve seen all the major auction catalogs and I’ve talked to almost all of the advanced collectors. In all of those years of doing this, I’ve only heard of ONE (1) other original copy of this poster, and that sold some 20 odd years ago. Additionally, being a big Popeye fan myself, I’ve made a point to track down as many different Popeye one-sheet images as I could find. I’ve seen many dozens of them, and no doubt, this one takes the prize.
I’ve personally had this poster for
over a quarter of a
century
now. When I originally got the poster it was folded and in fantastic
condition, but I wanted to frame it, and so I had it archivally museum paper
mounted by the best conservator in the USA. Because the poster was in such
solid condition, I didn’t want
ANY
paint applied to the poster itself.
I
just wanted it backed and ONLY touched up in the microscopic areas in the folds
where there was black.
There’s almost NO paint on this poster at all.
After the poster was backed on a thin sheet of Japanese rice paper I had it
framed. It’s still in the frame. You can have it in the frame if you opt for
local pickup. If not, I’ll take it out of the frame for safe shipment.
Buying
this Animation poster is ECONOMY PROOF!
Why waste your money in the stock
market? It can crash regardless of any decision you make and can even
crash regardless of any decision made by the company related to the stock
– Leaving you with a near worthless piece of paper that won’t inspire
anyone! With the purchase of an historic document such as this early 1934 treasure, it doesn’t matter what happens to the economy, you’ll
still have the poster, which can be displayed and enjoyed. The
magnificence of art and historic documents have an inherent value that
relates to civilization and society. Unless civilization itself crashes
then this piece will hold its value, and, if civilization itself
crashes – Who’ll care about money? This artifact is definitely
ECONOMY PROOF!
